The interdisciplinary course Bees and Society, taught by COA Partridge Chair in Agriculture and Food Systems Dr. Kourtney Collum, examines the interconnected relationship between humans and bees and asks what bees can teach us about ourselves and our food systems. Students explore the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences as they relate to the nexus of human society and bees through a mixture of readings, lectures, guest speakers, and multiple field trips throughout the term.
College of the Atlantic is the first college in the U.S. to focus on the relationship between humans and the environment. The intentionally small school of 350 students and 35 faculty members offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in human ecology – the study of how humans interact with our natural, social and technological environments. Each student develops their own course of study in human ecology, collaborating and innovating across multiple disciplines.
