Late winter is an excellent time to scout for bonsai material to collect. The weather is cool, the trees are ready to come out of dormancy, and walking around outside after being cooped up indoors makes for an exhilarating morning. It doesn't hurt if the day you go for a hike is also your birthday!
This video took place late February at my friend Larry's property. There were hundreds of hawthorns and several other species with interesting characteristics that we found. Most were on the top of a ridge, though a few were creek-side. The ramification of branches is a combination of deer, livestock, and living condition. It was an awesome birthday present, including good laughs with a good friend. Thanks Larry!
Actual collection of bonsai material from this & other excursions coming up in next videos, so stay tuned!
