You’re looking at the coldest place ever found in the universe. It’s the Boomerang Nebula, a young planetary nebula located 5,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. The temperature here is -272.15°C or -457.87°F. That’s just one kelvin above absolute zero, the temperature at which all atomic motion stops. Furthermore, this region is even colder than the cosmic microwave background radiation, which is the leftover heat from the Big Bang. The Boomerang Nebula gets its name from its distinctive shape, which resembles a boomerang. The nebula, spanning 10 light years, is formed by the outflow of gas from a dying star. As the gas expands, it cools down. The nebula is so cold because it is expanding very rapidly at a rate of around 160,000 km/hr. Astronomers believe it will continue to cool down for the next few thousand years.
