The Volkssturmgewehr was the assault rifle equivalent of the Volkswagen.

It was developed near the end of the war to arm the Volkssturm preparing for the final defense of the German homeland.

Sledgehammer has clearly taken liberties with this gun since the real gun was cheaply made and fairly inaccurate.
