We explore the east side of Cochise Stronghold, following its short History Trail before wandering the Nature Trail through the granite mountains and oak woodland. A place where the landscape itself helps tell the story of Cochise and the Apache who called these mountains home.

Hidden among the granite peaks of Arizona's Dragoon Mountains is a place closely tied to one of the most famous Apache leaders in American history.
In this video, we explore the east side of Cochise Stronghold near Cochise Stronghold Campground. We begin with the short History Trail, following the interpretive signs that tell the story of the land, the Apache people who lived here, and the events that shaped Cochise's life.
From there, we wander along the Stronghold Nature Trail, taking in the oak woodland and enormous granite formations surrounding us. Away from the signs and the history lessons, the landscape itself begins to tell another part of the story.
This was country that offered shelter, water, resources, and an extraordinary natural fortress. It's easy to understand why these mountains became so important to Cochise and the Chiricahua Apache.
Rather than simply looking at Cochise as a figure from the past, we wanted to spend some time in the landscape itself and consider what life might have been like for the people who knew these mountains as home.
Cochise Stronghold is part of the Coronado National Forest in southeastern Arizona.
