Lake Erie Bike Loop - Part 1 - Niagara Falls to Sandusky, OH
updated
During the late spring, there isn't enough snow for this activity on land, so instead they use the ice on Frobisher Bay. So I met up with the group at the Causeway Dock, across from Iqaluit, and from there we headed out and did a loop around Mair Island. Our total distance was about 18km and the dogs averaged a speed of 11.2km/hr.
In this video I have done my best to share the video highlights from the excursion, while presenting the information I've learned from the experience.
I filmed this using my GoPro HERO 9 Black action camera and Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphone.

I bought this bike in late November 2022 and I filmed this video approximately 11 months later. During this period I rode the bike nearly 2,000 km, almost exclusively within Toronto, ON, Canada.
The Vision R40 was manufactured in Seattle, WA by Advanced Transportation Products Inc (ATP). This model was produced from 1993 until 2003, and its unique selling feature was the ability to convert between Short Wheel Base (SWB) and Long Wheel Base (LWB), and also between Under-seat Steering (USS) and Over-seat Steering (OSS). Additional parts/kits are needed to do these conversions.
To learn more about the history of ATP/Vision, there's a website with a lot of great resources.

Some of the points of interest that I passed along the ride include: a view of the newer houses built on the Plateau, the baseball field, the Aqsarniit Hotel (the new hotel), the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, the Black Heart Café, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) building, the Qimugjuk Building, the Nunavut Legislative Assembly, RBC Financial Group, the Iqaluit Canada Post office, a dental clinic, CIBC bank, Tim Hortons, Northmart, Nakasuk School (elementary school), the Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre, the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, the Iqaluit Harbour pier, the KFC / Pizza Hut / Quick Stop, the Snack restaurant, the Frobisher Inn, St. Jude's Anglican Cathedral and the Iqaluit Aquatic Centre.
In this video I was riding a CCM Inception bicycle which I borrowed. I filmed this using my GoPro HERO 9 Black action camera mounted to a chest strap. I recorded the audio with a modified dreamGEAR gaming headset, plugged into an old smartphone. Unfortunately I had forgotten to bring the equipment that I normally use for recording audio with me on this trip, so I had to make do with what I could find in the stores in town.

During the majority of the year, most of this river is too shallow to paddle, so we completed this trip in the early spring, on the weekend of April 1-2, 2023 when the water level was essentially at its peak. In between Day 1 and Day 2 we spent the night camping near the river. Throughout the two days, there were a total of 10 man-made obstacles (mostly weir dams) that we portaged around.
We passed many landmarks along the way including: the Nashville Conversation Reserve, the Kleinburg Film Studios, the Kleinburg Water Resource Recovery Facility, The Country Club (former golf course), the Humber Valley Golf Course, the Weston Golf & Country Club, Scarlett Woods Golf Course, and the Lambton Golf & Country Club. We also passed several communities and neighbourhoods including: Nashville, Kleinburg, Elder Mills, Vaughan Mills, Woodbridge, Humber Summit, Mount Olive, Thistletown, Humbermede, Pelmo Park - Humberlea, Weston, Humber Heights, Westmount, Roselands, Scarlett Mills, Lambton Mills, Warren Park, Baby Point, The Kingsway, Old Mill, Swansea, and Humber Bay Shores. All these locations are within the municipalities of Caledon (Peel Region), King Township (York Region), Vaughan (York Region) and Toronto. We paddled under more than 60 bridges, including: Hickman St, Highway 50 / Queen St N, Humber Lea Rd, King St E, the Historic Sneath Rd bridge, Caledon King Townline S, Huntington Rd, the historic McEwen Bridge (Kirby Rd), Nashville Rd, Highway 27, Major MacKenzie Dr W, an Elder Mills trail bridge, Rutherford Rd, Vaughan Mills Rd, 6 bridges for the Country Club (formerly Board of Trade) golf course, Clarence St, Woodbridge Ave, Highway 7, Canadian Pacific Rail's MacTier Subdivision, Highway 407, Canadian National Rail's Halton Subdivision, Steeles Ave W, 9 bridges for the Humber River Trail, Finch Ave W / Islington Ave, Albion Rd, Highway 401, GO Transit's Weston Subdivision (Kitchener Line), St Phillips Rd, Lawrence Ave W, Eglinton Ave, Scarlett Rd, Canadian Pacific Rail's Galt Subdivision (GO Transit's Milton Line), Dundas St W, Old Mill Rd, TTC's Line 2 - Bloor Danforth Subway, Bloor St W, The Queensway, GO Transit's Oakville Subdivision (Lakeshore West), Lake Shore Blvd W, Gardiner Expressway, and the Humber Bay Arch Bridge.

There has been a 10 month delay between when I filmed these videos and when I am posting it. On similar videos I've posted in the past, I've received comments from viewers who felt inspired to try a similar trip of their own. I decided to save this mini-series to post at the very beginning of the paddling season so that anyone who's interested to trying this section of the Trent-Severn can start planning their trip right away.

The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30. I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. While I normally film with this device in 4K, I mistakenly had the camera set to a lower resolution for the duration of this day.

There has been a 10 month delay between when I filmed this video and when I am posting it. On similar videos I've posted in the past, I've received comments from viewers who felt inspired to try a similar trip of their own. I decided to save this mini-series to post at the very beginning of the paddling season so that anyone who's interested to trying this section of the Trent-Severn can start planning their trip right away.
Strava for Day 1: strava.com/activities/5637976725
In this episode, I was dropped off at the boat launch next to Centennial Park in Washago where I paddling northwest to the Swift Rapids Lockstation. I took the canoe through 2 locks: Lock 42 - Couchiching and Lock 43 - Swift Rapids. I paddled through the Severn Canal, the Severn River, and Sparrow Lake. I paddled under a total of 5 bridges including the Highway 11, the Severn Canal CN Railway Swing Bridge, Canal Rd, Hamlet Bridge 57 (Canning Rd), and the Hydro Glen CN Railway Bridge. After arriving at my destination, I spent the night camping on the bottom side of the Swift Rapids locks.

As mentioned in the video, since I had forgotten to turn on the Strava App when I began skiing, I was hoping that I'd be able to extract the GPS data from my action camera. While I was able to do this, unfortunately the data was not usable because the camera hadn't successfully resolved my location before I started filming. Because I was interested in seeing what my route looks like on the map, I decided to approximate it by drawing a line on Google Earth while reviewing the video footage. Using a few tricks, I was able to import this line into Strava, but it's obviously missing the speed data.

My apologies for the unfortunate smudges on the camera lens. With this particular camera mounting setup, I discovered that the sweat from my forehead drips directly down onto the camera. Even on this cold day in November, I sweat quite a bit while riding. After reviewing the footage from this video, I have been much more careful about checking and cleaning the lens!

I decided to make this video because it was a subject that I received a lot of questions about when I posted videos from my Trent-Severn Waterway trip. I filmed this in the afternoon of Day 8 of my Rideau Canal trip. This video is by no means a comprehensive guide to packing for a canoe trip. but a good reference point for someone considering this type of trip.
