I show how a bicycle coaster brake hubs works, including a cutaway shot of the hub so you can see the inside of it as it is working. A bike with a coaster brake hub goes forward when you pedal forward, coasts like a freewheel when you stop pedaling, and brakes when you pedal backwards. They are usually single speed, but there are some internally geared hubs that have coaster brakes.
A couple things I forgot to mention. The arm is attached to the chain stay to hold the axle from turning. Other wise the whole axle would rotate in the dropouts when you hit the brakes. The teeth between the clutch and drive side expander allow clutch to lock in to the expander so that all the force from the backpedal goes into pushing the expander into the brake shoes. The cranks stop when it has pushed the shoes as far as they will go.
The hub in the video is a Bendix 76. Other coaster brakes may be slightly different on the inside, especially the clutch. But the concepts are probably are going to be the same with driver, clutch, and expanders.
