This MRSD team is part of a larger multi-year effort to develop firefighter safety technology from AirLab (Sebastian Scherer), AART Lab (Katia Sycara), and Imaging Lab (Ioannis Gkioulekas), and that the effort is led by PhD Student Andrew Jong.

First responders typically arrive on scene with little to no information about the environment they need to enter.

A firefighter has to gather information, analyze the scene, and take action in time often measured in seconds.

Where is the fire?
Where are entrances and exits?
Where are the people inside?

The unknown, obstructions and reduced visibility put first responders’ lives at risk.

An MRSD Team at the CMU Robotics Institute is developing a robotic platform to map environments through perceptual degradation, identify points of interest, and relay that information back to first responders. The goal is to reduce info blindness and increase safety.

The team also demonstrated the system progress by analyzing and mapping a structure obscured by plumes of smoke.

Team Smores is 1 of 9 teams working on projects this year to solve real-world problems like this.
