The Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute (CMARI) tags, tracks and monitors manatees released by the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP). The vital data collected by researchers ensures the well-being and success of rehabilitated manatees after release and provides insights into their use of habitats and waterways to help protect the species in the wild. CMARI researchers travel across the state of Florida and into Georgia and the Carolinas tagging manatees before release and tracking them through rivers, springs, wetlands and coastal areas. They record observations in the field, find manatees when they need to be retagged after losing their tracking gear, identify manatees that have successfully adapted back into the wild, and coordinate rescue efforts with the MRP if a tracked manatee may not be doing well.
