In ‘On Cruelty’ Montaigne pointed towards virtue as goodness performed in spite of hedonistic convenience of sin, rather than goodness performed instead of it. He was also 500 years before his time in the drawn equivalence between Man and Beast, so much so that the Daily Mail would be tempted to call him a raving veganised terrorist today.
