In November 2023, Sarah and I took on an unforgettable adventure that we couldn’t pass up during our trip to the U.K.! We rearranged our plans and drove from Conway, Wales to Preston, England, just to experience the only Via Ferrata offered in all of England, located at the historic Honister Slate Mine in the Lake District.
What made this climb even more special? We were the only ones on the tour that day! It felt like our own private adventure as we scaled the cliffs inside this incredible mine. Little did we know, Honister’s slate mine produces some of the highest-quality slate in the world — it’s a place with a fascinating history and a whole lot of character.
For those unfamiliar, a Via Ferrata (meaning “iron road” in Italian) is a climbing route equipped with iron ladders, cables, and other fixed anchors, originally designed for soldiers to scale cliffs during World War II. These days, they’re all about adventure, and this one in particular is an experience you’ll never forget!
I’ve tried a few Via Ferrata routes in Utah, but there’s something truly unique about climbing inside a historic slate mine. At around $80-90 USD per person, it was worth every penny for the thrill, the views, and the history. Whether you’re an experienced climber or just looking for a fun way to get your adrenaline pumping, the Climb the Mine experience is a must-do in the U.K.!
