The 1960's hippies who started the "Earth Day" movement and the environmental movement to reduce and manage human industrial pollution did many good things for the people and planet. They raised awareness of the implications of cumulative pollutants and demanded change. They got it! Kudos! Today, Western industrialized nations have very stringent pollution controls and regulations - air, water, and soil pollution have been greatly reduced to below safe levels and many contaminated sites continue to be remediated. You can see more information about the vast reductions in air pollution and you can review climate change temperature data sets and other parameters at: YourEnvironment.ca However, recently climate activist Bill McKibben has helped put together the "Third Act" - kind of a Boomer version of the Greta's "Fridays for Climate" strikes and public demonstrations. It used to be that society relied on the wisdom of their elders to help guide the path forward; in the case of the 'Third Act" it seems this is nothing more than bizarre street theatre, advocating for a lack of open, civil debate. People can dress up all they want, but if we are going to institute beneficial public policies on climate and energy, shouldn't we be taking a look at data and evidence - not the sack cloth and ashes? Shouldn't a rational review of the data on climate science and the costs of the so-called 'energy transition' or 'net zero' prevail? There's no climate emergency, as confirmed by almost 2000 scientists and scholars of CLINTEL - the international climate intelligence network out of The Netherlands. The "Climate Lamenters" may be having fun dressing up in symbols of despair and repentance - but what message are they sending to our children and grandchildren? "The end is nigh?" In truth, our ancestors have overcome such extraordinary challenges, shouldn't we be teaching our children about that? Humans are adaptable and innovative. Let us celebrate that with no fear-mongering.
