Because of the poor maintenance of public infrastructures and inadequate emergency management in their country, passengers of estimated 4000 vehicles are now stuck on the expressways in South Central China, mostly in the province of Hubei. This traffic jam on steroid, since 3 February, has caused by mere two ill-equiped trucks which had failed to climb a snow-covered slop. A number of drivers stuck here are travelling to their ancestral hometowns to celebrate Lunar New Year with their families, and yet they are now facing to spend Lunar New Year's Eve (9 February) in their cars, with a shortage of food, water, sanitary and heating devices.
The increasing popularity of electric vehicle (EV) in China has also rendered the traffic of that country vulnerable to cold weathers which could shorten battery ranges by 10%. EVs also need longer periods of time to recharge, compared to the time needed for refuelling an average petrol or gas vehicle. Additionally, EV drivers currently stuck in this freezing weather are reluctant to switch on the heaters which would drain the batteries pretty quickly. What a combo!
