When a production line includes machining to shape or finish a part, dust and chip removal is usually required before moving on down the line. This can prove difficult to complete without containing the part, dust, and surrounding area, however this can cause access issues for workers. Today's IN Motion application will demonstrate one method for automating this process using high pressure air flow.
The first step to cleaning the part is isolating the workspace using a shield or cover. With the shield in place, a nozzle assembly with pneumatic line can be designed within the workspace cover to provide air flow to the part. In order to fully clean the part of all dust, the nozzle assembly must rotate around all sides of the workpiece. This can be automated through the use of a chain and sprocket system driven by a motor offset from the pneumatic line axis.
For easy installation and maintenance, the chain can be tensioned by adding slots to the motor mount base which allow it to slide back and forth. Knurled screws allow for manual fine-tune adjustments, and the position can be locked into place with screws in the base slots. A hollow shaft with a support can be used to provide strength against the tension of the chain.
With everything assemble, all that's left to do is turn on the air, start the motor, and within seconds, you've got a clean part ready for the next step in the production line.
The next time you choose to design outside the box, rest easy knowing that all the products mentioned in this episode, and more, are available through MISUMI.
