Synopsis:
Claude Monet in Giverny, Alice’s House documents how painter Claude Monet spent 43 years of his life (from 1883 until 1926) living in the house and gardens of Giverny, a rural village in Normandy.
After relocating from Paris, Monet found in Giverny not only tranquility and domestic stability, but also a fertile ground for a vast artistic revolution. There he embarked on what would become his defining work: painting series such as the Haystacks, the Cathedrals, and—most famously—the Water Lilies, drawn from his lovingly cultivated gardens with Japanese-style bridges and ponds.
The documentary uses unpublished letters, private photographs, archival documents and contemporary footage of the house and gardens — now preserved as a museum — to reconstruct Monet’s daily life, his domestic world with Alice Hoschedé (later his wife), and how that environment shaped his vision and technique.
By interweaving personal, historical and visual elements, the film not only pays tribute to Monet’s genius, but also reflects on the intimate bond between home, nature and art — and how Giverny became both his refuge and his greatest masterpiece.
