A harpsichord, also known by the name cembalo, is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by plucking a string when a key is pressed.
In the narrow sense, "harpsichord" designates only the large wing-shaped instruments in which the strings are perpendicular to the keyboard.
François Couperin is known above all for his harpsichord music: between 1713 and 1730 he published four books of suites (ordres) for harpsichord.
The movements of these suites have highly ornamented melodies and complex accompaniments, with frequent dialogues between treble and bass.

The Op. 50 sonatas were published in 1821 and dedicated to Luigi Cherubini.
The best known is the last one, titled Didone abbandonata (the title of a libretto by Meastasio which many composers had set to music before).

Frédéric Chopin wrote his Barcarole in F sharp major, Op. 60, between 1845 and 1846. It was one of the last pieces he ever played in front of an audience, and it was reported that he could barely play above the pianissimo level when he did so, such was the state of his health.
It is also the only barcarole of Chopins repertoire, which is not surprising, given that the barcarole form itself tends to impose some limitations on the composition process. Nonetheless, he was apparently fond of the work: it is nowadays a repertoire piece for many concert pianists, and many notable composers have praised it.
