Airing for nine seasons on CBS, 'Touched By an Angel' (1994) was almost a different kind of show. The pilot was darker, with the angels more like ghosts, holding the power of life and death over the living. Martha Williamson had a different concept, more positive and hopeful, with the spiritual beings helping people at a crossroads in their lives. The story-of-the-week made it a sort of anthology, but there were continuing threads with the heavenly participants. Most critics looked down their noses, but the show acquired 11 Emmy nominations and enjoyed four seasons in the top ten.
