Similar to the US 'Thriller' (hosted by Boris Karloff) the UK series of the same title offered stories of suspense, mystery, and the supernatural. It was produced by Brian Clemens (of 'The Avengers'). Meanwhile in the US, ABC had trouble with their late night schedule. In 1973 they came up with 'The Wide World of Entertainment', with different types of programs rotating on a weekly basis. They invested in the Clemens series, which is why so many episodes feature an American actor. In the US these shows aired during the 'Wide World of Mystery' weeks. Clemens brought in 'Avengers' composer Laurie Johnson, whose music gave these inexpensive productions a special quality. One writer noted that the theme tune and incidental music are 'a quintessential example of how music can play a major role in the establishment of mood and atmosphere, turning the most innocuous scene into one of foreboding.'
