There was an ulterior motive behind Four Star's various anthology series: almost any episode could become a pilot for a future show. 'Zane Grey Theatre' alone spawned seven Western series. The pilot for 'Saints and Sinners' aired in 1961 on 'The Dick Powell Show' and starred Nick Adams as a dedicated, intense newspaperman; the series followed in 1962. Guest stars included Red Buttons, Barbara Eden, Elizabeth Montgomery, Ray Walston, Cloris Leachman, and (in his final screen appearance) Paul Muni. Created by Adrian Spies, a real-life newshawk, 'Saints and Sinners' was realistic and serious; unfortunately it ended after 18 episodes. The dramatic Elmer Bernstein theme is a winner; like the series, it's worthy of rediscovery.
