On March 8, 1971 hit sketch comedy show LAUGH-IN, continuing its run of social commentary bits, aired a segment with stars Dan Rowan and Dick Martin and the rest of the cast aimed squarely at the F.B.I. and director, J. Edgar Hoover.
The song and dance number with Lily Tomlin, Ruth Buzzi and the regulars along with the jokes made such an impression on viewers that the next day a flurry of letters made their way to the network, advertisers, and the F.B.I. As you can guess, they weren't praising the producers and writers, but lodging serious complaints and support for the Bureau.
