This is the videorecording of our regularly scheduled Classic Metal Class, where metalheads-from-childhood Scott Tarulli and Greg Sadler delve into topics at the intersection of music history, philosophy, sociology, music theory, and other fields. Class is held monthly, depending on scheduling. You can find out when the class is scheduled by going to the ReasonIO events calendar, or following Greg in social media
In this session we return to a topic we discussed in a previous session: what actually make "best albums" by a band the best? Is this something purely subjective? Or something we have to determine by polling and record sales? Or are there better criteria we can use to at least make a case for these matters? Some of the other criteria we discuss are the "killer to thriller" ratio for songs, how influential the album is on later bands, what the bands and musicians themselves think, and how good the band and the musician is in the era of it being recorded.
For this particular discussion, we decided to focus in on five classic L.A. metal bands: Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ratt, and WASP. We also include results of polling carried out in social media, and Scott's, Greg's, and our session participant's reasoned choices for what the best albums of these 5 classic metal bands are. We are also joined by our friend and colleague, Rob Colter, who is both a metalhead and chair of the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at University of Wyoming
