Scholar Sauce | Classic JRPG World Maps aren't Spheres?!? #some3 @scholarsauce | Uploaded July 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
Classic Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG) are incredibly engaging to play and explore in. They almost always included a large world map that you would eventually get some kind of airship or plane to traverse. But those maps hid a dark secret: they were only pretending to be spheres. And no, they aren't flat planes either. They are actually shaped like a donut, or more precisely, a torus. This shape is pretty bizarre, but there are good reasons why early game developers chose to use a torus. In this video, come explore the strange geometry and topology of a classic JRPG toroidal world map and see why it was able to convince most gamers that the games actually occurred on spheres.
