Arrow Video finally bring City Slickers to Blu-ray in the UK — rescuing the film from DVD-only limbo for the first time on this side of the pond.
This release comes housed in a clear Amaray case with a slipcover, alongside a collectors booklet and reversible artwork — a nice physical presentation, even if it’s fairly modest by Arrow’s standards.
The disc uses the same HD transfer that previously appeared on Shout Factory’s Shout Select Blu-ray from 2018. Picture quality is very good for a standard Blu-ray, with solid detail and natural colours, but it’s hard not to feel this was a missed opportunity. The HD master originates from a 4K scan, making the lack of a 4K Ultra HD release especially disappointing.
Audio is provided via a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, carried over from the Shout release. Dialogue is clear, surround separation is strong, and the mix serves the film well throughout.
Extras are also ported over from previous DVD and Blu-ray editions, offering good insight into the making of the film — though there’s nothing new created specifically for this release.
Overall, this is a perfectly serviceable Blu-ray and it’s great to finally have City Slickers available in the UK on the format. However, with a 4K scan already in existence, Arrow could have gone further to bring this release up to modern standards.
