CITY OF BONES: THE MUSICAL

'Welcome to New York' by Taylor Swift
Sung by: Clary, Simon, Ensemble
How could I not use this song for the opening of the musical. We are introduced to Clary and Simon and the thrills of New York. During this song there would be an extended instrumental in which Clary would see Jace, Isabelle and Alec dealing with the demon. Plus I had to include Taylor Swift somewhere. It's the law.

'Exhale' by Sabrina Carpenter
Sung by: Clary
The lyrics to the second verse really spoke to me about what Clary would be feeling in that moment. Not really knowing who she is or anything about her family. The line 'I try to be an angel but I don't think I can' works perfectly on so many levels.

'I'm Just a Kid' by Simple Plan
Sung by: Clary, Jace, Alec, Izzy
Clary is dealing with her life being turned upside down. Jace is struggling with his family. Alec is hiding his sexuality. Izzy is hiding her own insecurities by dating those her parents don't approve of. Despite everything, they are all actually still kids trying to find their place and feeling alone even with each other. It's such a fun song and I can see the four of them having a real angsty musical moment separately but to the same song.

'No Words' by Sabrina Carpenter
Sung by: Clary
The lyrics to this one really shows Clary's pent up anger and sadness over losing her mother and now the pain of Luke's betrayal. The lyric 'ribs are a cage of a wild heart' made me thing of Luke as a werewolf and it just worked so well.

'Gotta Find Where I Belong' by Milo Manheim & Meg Donnelly
Sung by: Clary, Jace
I've no idea how the lyrics to this song from Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 2 work so well here but they really do. Clary is feeling alone and unsure of what to do after her visit to the Silent Brothers and it is clear Jace wants to help but he can't and doesn't want to make things worse. The song just SCREAMED Clace to me.

'Party on a Weekday' by MYBADD, Olivia Holt
Sung by: Magnus, Izzy, Clary, Jace, Simon, Alec
Honestly this song is just a banger and I think the fact it's about throwing a party makes it even better to be used as Magnus's introduction. We get to see Simon drink the tonic, Clary letting loose with Izzy and Jace, Alec meeting Magnus's eye and not quite knowing what to do...

'In Too Deep' by Sum 41
Sung by: Simon
Tell me the lyrics to this second verse don't perfectly describe what it must be like in Simon's head during this part of the book. He's just been turned into a rat and back into a human, and it must be so confusing for him. Plus he'd feel like he's losing Clary, so this song just fits so well.

'Listen To Your Heart' by Roxette
Sung by: Clary, Jace, Simon
I envision this as a super angsty, dramatic moment with each side of the triangle singing their little heart about because they are teenagers and romance is hard.

'Irresistible' by The Corrs
Sung by: Magnus
Every musical needs a fun dream sequence right? For me it's this song and this moment right here. Magnus is trying to heal Alec and at the same time he just knows there is something special about the Shadowhunter and realises he may develop feelings. Plus this song just feeeeels like Malec.

'When The Sand Runs Out' by Rascal Flatts
Sung by: Luke
For me this song symbolises a number of changes in Luke. It references his past change into a werewolf, Clary realising he never betrayed her, his turning from Valentine, wanting to be a better man and prove everyone wrong. The lyrics in this second verse just fit so so perfectly.

'Happily Ever After' by He Is We
Sung by: Clary, Jace... then joined at the end by Simon, Izzy, Alec, Magnus, Jocelyn, Luke
If I had to pick one song to sum up City of Bones it would be this one. The uncertainty. The wanting to know if you will have a happy ending. The lyrics about 'a boy and a girl tryin to take on the world one kiss at a time' knowing at that moment they think they are siblings and 'we all have a story of adolescence and all it's glory' I mean stop it. The song is about growing up and realising you have to find your own happily ever after is EXACTLY what City of Bones is about not just for Clary and co. but also for the adults and I just think it'd be the perfect way to end the musical, especially as it has an ambiguous tone to it, leading into the sequel.
