Video games could be at the heart of the next scientific research revolution, as the Citizen Science project aims to co-opt the world's 3 billion weekly hours of gaming in the name of scientific discovery.

Forget shooting and racing - gaming has evolved to incorporate folding protein chains, cancer research and quantum computing. "We take scientific tasks and inject them seamlessley into major video games", says Attila Szantner, founder of Massively Multiplayer Online Science. Radical new projects - conducted from a gamer's bedroom - focus on Virtual Reality and the overall "gamification" of science's most laborious fields.
