"I think a bigger point of interest than the lyrics of the song might be the musical origin. I had a riff sitting around for over a decade that I just couldn’t find a place for. It had this Trouble / Black Sabbath vibe that I love, complete with a vocal melody and lyrics that I ultimately kept intact once I decided it all fit into the demo I was working on (later to be named “Neophyte.”) Ironically that riff and whole related section doesn’t have much in common with the rest of the track musically, which of course is why it totally made sense to my brain. I’ve always enjoyed listening to and ultimately creating musical journeys that are musical….uh, journeys. So keeping the same instruments or even vibes within one track is not something I normally execute with much success. My natural instinct and desire is to make musical styles that are totally disparate all work under the roof of the same song. (Eventually I take these tiny 'song-homes' and kick them out into the world for anyone who might want to live in them for awhile.)
I truly appreciate any of you that have willingly decided to live in one of my musical homes, neophyte or seasoned veteran alike. I will continue building them for as long as I have breath in these mortal lungs and hope that in my final hours I can recall these words and what they symbolize to me …
