A freshwater single cell ciliate emerging from its resting cyst.

Many ciliates survive unfavorable conditions by forming a protective cyst. Inside, the cell reorganizes and remains dormant until the environment improves. What we see here is excystment — the moment the organism breaks free and resumes active life.
