Chávez chronicles a turbulent and impactful chapter in Venezuela’s history through the life of Hugo Chávez - from a failed military uprising in 1992 to his rise to power. The film presents his challenge to the country’s political establishment, his growing support among the working classes, and his election in 1999, which sparks sweeping social and political changes.
It traces a presidency marked by deep divisions, including the 2002 coup that briefly removes him from power before he returns to Caracas with strong backing from his supporters. Through this, Chávez shows how he strengthens his position at home while promoting unity across Latin America and aligning with movements focused on sovereignty and independence. In his final years, the story follows his declining health as he continues to lead and wins re-election in 2012. Unable to complete the term, he leaves responsibility to Nicolás Maduro, who announces his death in 2013.
