After picking up a paintbrush at the age of 40, Churchill painted prolifically, taking along his easel on his travels to 'daub' en plein air. And despite his incessant claims that he was merely an amateur, he developed an admirable flair for the art.
'Just to paint is great fun,' the statesman wrote. 'The colours are lovely to look at and delicious to squeeze out.'
