One of the foremost concerns in dialogue between Catholics and Protestants involves the notion of infallible rules outside of Scripture. For Christians living before the Protestant Reformation, we confess that not only those things revealed by God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit are to be considered infallible (Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition) - that is, unable to err - but also those things which are said to be, in a special way, guided by the Divine Providence and protection of the Holy Spirit. Be that as it may, the Protestant reformers, in their attempt to recover the apostolic faith which - to them - had long been distorted, failed to see the fundamental affirmation within the fathers of the infallibility of the Church. In this video, I will demonstrate the theological, biblical, and historical basis for affirming the infallibility of Ecumenical Councils as based upon the notion that the Church is invincible and indefensible in holding the true faith handed down by Christ through his Apostles and forever renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father.
