Johnny B. Goode is a single by American musician Chuck Berry, released in 1958.
Berry wrote this piece in 1955 and published it on March 31, 1958. It is the rock & roll vision of the American dream: the text is about a poor country boy who, despite being unable to read or write, manages to become a star. thanks to hard work and his great natural ability to play the guitar.
Although partly autobiographical, it is likely that this song was inspired by Johnnie Johnson who played the piano and composed numerous songs with Berry, and is considered the greatest contributor to Berry's unique sound.
In an earlier unreleased version, Chuck sang "black boy" instead of "country boy", but replaced it for fear that it would not be broadcast on the radio. Compared to the boy's name, Berry was born on Goode Avenue in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Berry later wrote a sequel to this song, called Bye Bye Johnny. His "concerto in B. Goode" is an instrumental exploration of the "Chuck Berry style" performed by his own teacher and inventor.
A recording of the song by Berry was included in the Voyager Golden Record, attached to the Voyager spacecraft as one of three examples of the music of the United States of America and as a representation of rock & roll among humanity's cultural achievements. The piece is placed in 7th place in the list of the 500 best songs according to Rolling Stone.
