On Friday, May 21, 2021, choreographer and dancer Cynthia Word gave a presentation to the CHS research community. The event was recorded live via Zoom.

In "Sappho and Isadora: Once Again, This Time,” Ms. Word is your guide in investigating two artists who pioneered the expression of the solo female voice in poetry and dance. Through words, photography, music, and videography, we realize kinship between Sappho, 7th century BCE poet, and Isadora Duncan, 19th century CE dancer. What can we learn from the impact of time and fragmentation on their art? How does it affect us? How can we apply what we learn? And what new works can emerge from the pieces?

Based in Washington, DC, Ms. Word is passionate about creating performance events that blend compelling story, live music, contemporary choreography and the classic dances of Isadora Duncan to provide engagement for audience members through many modalities. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Word Dance Theater.
