UPDATE OCTOBER 2018: New mix of this song! drive.google.com/file/d/1WNyKjnKkwq52X4AcEzbU8YMg_H6VJf0y/view?usp=sharing
I found the multitracks for this song again (lost them, thought they were on a hard drive that failed, turns out they were on my main hard drive the whole time) and remixed the song to sound hopefully more balanced and dynamic.

Hello everyone!

I've had the idea to do this cover for quite a while, but since the VGCovers subreddit announced their December cover competition, with the theme of "Ice Levels", I jumped at the chance to do a cover of this song. Also, I haven't seen anyone on YouTube do a metal cover of this Chrono Trigger song, most likely because it was only in the code of the SNES and PSX versions of the game, never actually played at any point in the game.

SPOILERS: The reason I chose Singing Mountain is because in the DS version of Chrono Trigger, there is a part of the endgame sidequests which uses this song as background music, and it is a level which looks like a snowy mountain. I feel like this song should have made it into the final game as the background music for Death Peak, as it would have fit the area of the game.

For this cover I used a guitar you would not expect in a metal cover; a Fender Stratocaster. Specifically, a 1982 Fender Stratocaster with three single coils. Anyone who is into guitar tone will know that classic single coil pickups and high gain do not go well together, since single coil pickups have the problem of the 50/60 cycle hum. That's why normally you'll see people playing humbuckers in heavy metal, unless they're using stacked single coils to cancel out the noise.
Who says a Stratocaster can't play metal?!

Also I brought back the 7-string Ibanez, since the last time I used it was for my Majora's Mask Metal Medley way back near the end of 2014 (jeez has it really been that long?) and it was set to Drop G tuning, which works out perfectly for this song, since it is also in the key of G minor. I think I'm also getting the hang of mixing drop-tuned 7-string guitars in metal. That was probably the reason why I haven't used the 7 string guitar in a cover for almost a year, because I couldn't get a decent sound for rhythm guitar out of it, the Majora's Mask medley rhythm guitar was too muddy, and the Hidden Village cover rhythm guitar was too quiet.

For the lead guitar tone I used a fuzz pedal I made myself while I was at work experience, which uses basically the same circuit as an original Silicon Fuzz Face. The reason I used the fuzz instead of the distortion pedal for the lead sound was because the fuzz has a slightly darker tone more suited for lead, and also because why the hell not.

This cover also showcases the clean sound that I've managed to get quite well. For the clean sound I was aiming for a David Gilmour-esque style clean sound, based on his tone from songs such as "Raise My Rent" from his debut solo album "David Gilmour". Coupled with a stereo chorus you get a very big-sounding clean tone, perfect for the djent-style ambient cleans. I use the same effects on my classical guitar covers.
