The PS1 version of Chrono Trigger does suffer from some bad optimization. There are some load times before battles, and some other issues. That being said, in the end, Chrono Trigger is still a turn-based RPG, and I think the complaints about the optimization are kind of moot.

If this was a fast-paced shmup or something, then yes, the slowdown and extra load times would be inexcusable. However, this is a turn-based RPG, and by nature, isn't a fast-paced affair. Also, if I remember correctly, playing it on the PS2 with fast loading on, cuts the load times down a bit. That might be the better way to play it instead of using the PS3 to upscale like I am in this footage.

This is the only version of Chrono Trigger I own, having failed to get my hands on the Snes version of the game back in the day before it went stupid expensive, so I may be a little softer on the PS1 version than I should be. In the end, I still get to experience one of the best RPG's of all time, and considering that the Chronicles version of Chrono Trigger is still anywhere between $15-$30 on Ebay, it's also one of the cheapest ways to play the game.

The complaints over the optimization issues have kept the PS1 port relatively cheap. Checking on Ebay, even the DS port has gone way up in price, so, to anyone looking to play this game for a reasonable price, along with a port of Final Fantasy IV, pick up Final Fantasy Chronicles on the PS1 before people realize how cheap it is. I'm giving you a warning that there is a small window to pick this game up for cheap, and in the end, the technical issues aren't that bad in this port. So yes, a little disappointing on Squaresoft's part, but the game is still playable, and still fantastic in this version.

NOTE: It's been a while since I played this game, so I forgot where to go in some spots.
