I only used direction buttons to prevent my character from shifting too much from the starting position (making for more consistent visual references).
1. Position your character against the top wall of the stairway (without sliding against the corners of walls to prevent shifting as mentioned above, I do this by making sure I am centered with the stairway before stepping onto it, this part is not precise).
2. Tap the left face button until Leena's forehead is flush with the vertex of the upper corner. Direction button taps feel more or less consistent, where each tap seems to shift the character by a set unit if not held very long, I demonstrate the apparent consistency of this by loading the savestate and re-trying the trick a few times. This fact is another reason to avoid shifting the character from the starting orientation.
3. Buffer both the down and left face buttons by pausing, pressing and holding both, and unpausing. This lets the game register both inputs simultaneously. Once the character is all the way into the corner, repeat the process in reverse by pausing (while still holding down and left), releasing both buttons, then unpausing. This releases both in-game simultaneously.
To check for a successful set up, there should be a singular 'light' pixel between the right of her head (relative to the camera) and the dark texture on the floor. There is probably a better visual reference but that is just what I use.
Hope this helps! Let me know if this can be improved, or has issues.
