'Kōripo' (Swirl) is the first of a set of five contrasting pieces titled 'Whetu Iti' (Little Stars), commissioned by Matthew Marshall. It is descriptive music, intended to be ‘propelled & energetic’. Depicting the eddies, swirls, waterfalls and whirlpools of a mountain river rushing through the bush, Kōripo’s journey is punctuated by tranquil pools and backwaters. But the water is restless and never slows for long, pausing but briefly at the seeming end of its journey before rushing off again.
