"Ding Dong Merrily on High" began as a 16th-century French secular dance tune, "Branle de l'Official," found in Thoinot Arbeau's dance book, Orchésographie from 1589. Much later in 1924, George Ratcliffe Woodward adapted it into a Christmas carol with English lyrics about ringing bells in his publication "Cambridge Carol Book". Woodward's love for church bells and Laton poetry inspired the somewhat strange and seemingly arcane lyrics that make the text seem much older than it really is.
