Visiting northern France at Christmas in the towns of: Amien 00:30, Rouen 02:23, Mont-Saint-Michel 04:19, Dinan 07:08,
The holiday season in Northern France is a festive time of year with many Christmas shopping kiosks set up along the pedestrian lanes and plazas of each town.
This video was photographed in a previous year, before the covid pandemic. This year Christmas markets are closed, but the video at least gives us a chance to take a look, and look forward to next year.
We’re walking initially through the modern part of Amiens, down the main pedestrian mall of Amiens, which has over 100 Christmas shopping kiosks, a typical festive French Christmas scene.
We’re heading into the old town and in particular we've come here to see the great cathedral.
The Amiens Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in all of France, with a great feeling of interior light and air.
Some of Amiens’ buildings date from the Middle Ages, so it makes a nice little walk and then back down through the modern part of town, a pedestrian promenade. Your visit to Amiens will take about 2 to 3 hours, for the Christmas shopping and that great cathedral.
Rouen is next in our survey of Normandy’s Christmas markets. This is the capital of Normandy one of the most important cities in the country and certainly one of the most historic a rich history that goes back four 2000 years, starting with the Romans. You can see a lot of half timbered buildings you'll want to take a lot of pictures while you're here probably the largest collection of half timbered medieval buildings in all of France and it's easy to explore on foot. The main charm is simply walking these pleasant pedestrian streets and doing some window shopping or perhaps some real shopping. There are block after block that are just for pedestrians and always lined with these incredible historic buildings. Ice skating in front of the Cathedral is a charming holiday sight.
We’re going to show around Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mont-Saint-Michel has been a pilgrimage site for thousand years and still today. It's one of the most important pilgrimage sites in all of Europe is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Europe in the season it gets really jam but we are here in early December when it is really quite lovely and quite empty. It's perfect. There is a more subdued Christmas spirit here because it is so small and quiet.
Of course Mont-Saint-Michel is a pedestrian zone. There are absolutely no cars in this little tiny village. It's only about 1/2 a mile across from one end to the other.
It is one of the most magical places you'll ever see. It's an island connected by Causeway to the mainland and it has a great history going back to the year 600 and 700 when the early monastery was built here and is expanded and grown over the centuries it took.
Next we venture into nearby Brittany to visit Dinan, without doubt one of the most attractive and best preserved small towns in Brittany. Dinan’s old town is a warren of narrow streets where you’ll find the best examples of the half-timbered houses. Some streets in the pedestrian Old Town are lined with many Christmas trees contributing to the holiday atmosphere.
Dinan has been designated a Town of Art and History and the place is filled with artists, sculptors, engravers, bookbinders, glassblowers and more. have a browse in the arts and crafts shops
The most attractive part of Dinan is perhaps its river port, with a shore lined with old stone houses, many of which are now waterside restaurants.
Take a walk along the old towpath or cross the 15th-century stone bridge, where up above you’ll see part of the 3km-long ramparts and castle.
