Today I spoke with Carie Moore of "Rebel Mothering," who heavily deconstructed her faith and uses her platform to explore child liberation theology and its applications.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Deconstructing the concepts of hell and atonement theory.
• Admitting that the Bible is not a good parenting handbook.
• Making the choice to end corporal punishment and replace it with gentleness, respect, and non-violent parenting.
• Moving past the worldview that it is necessary to break a child's will to prepare them to bow their knees to god.
• The importance of fostering curiosity, not dogmatic certainty, in children.
• Removing the pressure of children needing to believe what their parents do.
• Giving children the gift of spiritual autonomy.
• Acknowledging that children are a universally oppressed group, despite being whole people deserving of rights and autonomy.
• How Christianity normalizes scaring children.
• Understanding why fundamentalist Christians are unable to have open and civil dialogue.
• Realizing the beauty, power, and long-term ripple effects of gentle parenting and childhood autonomy.
• Removing shame from the dynamics of how we talk to ourselves and to our children.
