The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) opened in Shanghai on July 17, with President Xi Jinping attending the opening ceremony for the first time and urging countries to seize the opportunities of open-source AI and make it a public good for all humanity. During the event, 29 countries signed on to the World AI Cooperation Organization (WAICO) to promote international cooperation and global governance of AI.
