China said on Friday that US "sanctions and pressure" would not resolve the Middle East conflict, after Washington urged governments including Beijing to join efforts to isolate the Iranian economy. China also refuted a claim from Washington that it has improperly held a US citizen since early June, saying the American was suspected of violating Chinese law.
