China just assembled a fully liveable 10-storey apartment building — walls, windows, balconies, plumbing, and wiring — in just 28 hours and 45 minutes. In London or New York, that same building takes 3 years. So what's actually going on?
This is the story of Zhang Yue, an air conditioning manufacturer turned construction revolutionary, who watched 70,000 people die in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake — buried under buildings that "met code" — and asked one question the entire construction industry had spent 100 years avoiding: why are we still building this way?
Inside Broad Group's 230,000 m² factory in Changsha, fully finished modular steel rooms are built, wired, and fitted before they ever reach a site. No cure time. No sequencing delays. Just a crane, a fleet of trucks, and a 28-hour stack. The result is a structure rated to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake and engineered to last 1,000 years — assembled faster than a flight from London to New York.
Running parallel to this, Shanghai-based Winsun built a gantry 3D printer that produced 10 liveable homes in a single 24-hour run — using recycled demolition waste as its material, cutting construction costs by up to 60%.
Together, these two technologies are the construction industry's first real answer to 100 million missing housing units, an ageing global workforce, and a climate crisis demanding less waste from one of the world's dirtiest industries.
So why isn't this the global standard yet? The engineering works. The economics are moving fast. The real barrier was never technical — it was written into building codes, supply chains, and a system that profits from building slowly.
The countries watching China most closely aren't Germany or the United States. They're Vietnam, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the Gulf states — places with housing crises too urgent to wait.
The rest of the world is still pouring concrete and waiting 28 days per floor to cure.
China is stacking ten floors in a day.
