Let's chill with a challenge run: Shining Force 2, where I'm using mostly what's considered low tier units only. I'm playing on original hardware.
Here's a few general guidelines for the "with exceptions" and Sarah being a free unit:
- May is widely debated in tier lists over her usefulness. She's often put in low to mid tier simply just due to being an archer (they're one of the worst classes in the game), despite being the best in her class. I personally think she's a great character, but I digress.
- "Why use Tyrin? He's clearly better than Kazin and you're not using him" Tyrin, in a typical playthrough with Egress spamming to grind, is easily a better Wizard than Kazin. Problem with Tyrin is that in a playthrough that goes straight through, with no grinding, and with an endgame where enemies have ridiculous amounts of HP, he's really not that great. He'll never learn Bolt 3 and 4 because he needs to be level 34 (promoted) for Bolt 3, and Level 40 for Bolt 4.... Kazin was banned specifically because of his early to midgame usefulness. Unlike Kazin, Tyrin takes actual time and effort to realize his potential... and time is not on our side in a challenge run. He's a great Freeze 4 bot, though.
- On the subject of Tyrin, I figured it'd be fun to pick what I consider the weakest choice for the Creed's Mansion characters. Again, you have to consider the challenge conditions. Tyrin is, by no stretch of the imagination, a low tier or the weakest Creed character... in casual play. But out of the four, he's the one that requires the most babying in a no grinding run. Karna's self-explanatory, Eric is literally the best Paladin/Pegasus Knight, and Randolf is just a slightly better Jaha (who is banned).
- Sarah is free because 1) unlike SF1, a healer is a must for runs like these. 2) She's technically the second worst healer out of your options because no Aura for group healing. Sheela is a much worse healer though. And 3) She's a failsafe in place as a Master Monk in case the endgame on Super creates some impossible situations for me to get out of.
