Before the World Premiere event of Chief of War, Kanaeokana was asked to sit down with some of the folks behind the making of the Apple TV+ show.
In this clip, former Hawaiian immersion student, Leimaile Barrett, references the migration of Polynesian people, where Tahitians sailed to and settled in Hawaiʻi and then some hundreds of years (give or take) later, Hawaiians sailed to Aotearoa and settled there. So just as Tahiti is a makua or parent to Hawaiʻi, so is Hawaiʻi a makua to Aotearoa. With that, we asked Temuera Morrison (Kahekili) and Cliff Curtis (Keoua) what it was like for them, as Māori, to be in that “keiki role” helping their makua remember who we, as Kanaka Maoli, are.
We then asked lead writer and co-director, Paʻakai Sibbett, what he hopes Pacific peoples, indigenous peoples and native peoples around the world will take away from this show.
