The final leg of my northern Thailand motorcycle road trip takes a dramatic turn as I ride from Chiang Rai back to Chiang Mai through heavy rain, mountain roads, and miserable conditions. Taking the longer Phayao route to avoid roadworks, I’m eventually faced with a serious problem—my bike, Lucille, starts overheating in the middle of nowhere.
With 60+ km still to go, I crawl along the hard shoulder, hoping the engine survives. Thankfully, I make it back to Chiang Mai, where a local mechanic replaces the damaged cooling and other parts. After a second repair for a rear-wheel issue, Lucille is finally running like new.
This Thailand motorcycle adventure ends with a mix of relief, lessons learned, and a big question: is it time for Lucille to retire from long-distance road trips?
