Raju: Bheem ... why do we celebrate Navratri, this time of the year?
Bheem: Raju!
Navratri is one of the most important festivals of Hindus.
The word NavRatri is formed with two words 'Nava' and 'Ratri'. Nava means nine and Ratri means nights hence Navratri means ‘nine nights’.
We celebrate Navratri to worship the nine different forms of Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Divine Power or ‘Shakti’, who destroyed evil and protected the entire universe.
Raju: Really … !! But How??
Bheem: Long long ago, there was a demon king named Mahishasur, who had the body of a human and the head of a buffalo. Mahishasur prayed & meditated very hard for many years to please Lord Brahma. With the desire of being immortal, he asked from the Lord that no human or god should be able to kill him. Pleased with his prayers, Lord granted him, his wish.
But soon after, thinking that he was invincible, the demon king ordered his army to spread terror on the entire earth and even the Heaven. The terrified Gods went to Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to ask for help.
Since Mahishasur had received the blessing that neither human nor God could kill him, therefore, Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva decided to creat a bright light of divine power or ‘Shakti’ to destroy the demon. Out of this bright & beautiful light, the embodiment of ‘Shakti’, the ten-armed Goddess Durga was born.
Goddess Durga went to fight Mahishasur and at the end of an epic, fierce battle that lasted for 9 days & nights, meaning Nav Ratri, the Goddess killed the demon to finally restore the balance of life!
To mark this victory of good over evil, we celebrate Navratri followed by Durga Puja to worship Goddess Durga…
