This year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has been investigating a high level of manatee mortalities and rescues along the Atlantic coast of Florida. "Chessie", a male West Indian manatee was first rescued back in 1994 in the Chesapeake Bay and has become well known based on his scar pattern.
Chessie was rescued by FWC due to buoyancy issues, and after completing radiographs it was discovered that he was suffering from pneumonia. We were able to give nebulizer treatments, which is a first for a manatee here at SeaWorld. After successful rehabilitation we were able to release Chessie back to the wild. Because of his extraordinary travel tendencies along the East Coast, our partners at Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, have fitted Chessie with a GPS satellite tag and will be monitoring his movements as part of its Northern Atlantic Coast study.
