Mrs. Sappleton’s young niece, Vera, entertains Framton by telling him a tragic story about how her aunts husband and brothers went hunting and never returned, supposedly having drowned in a bog. Vera describes how Mrs. Sappleton keeps the window open in anticipation of their return.
As the story unfolds, Mrs. Sappleton enters and discusses her husband and brothers as if they are still alive, which confuses Framton. Just then, the three men walk in through the open window, alive and well. Terrified, Framton flees the house. The story ends with Vera revealing that she made up the story to play a prank on Framton, showcasing her cleverness and the theme of deception.")

The poem ends with the somber realization that despite all hope, the team loses, encapsulating themes of disappointment and the unpredictability of sports.")
