Chemehuevi Language Sign Unveiling at the Center for Creative Photography

Council members and Chairman Glenn Lodge of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe visited the university campus on March 19, 2025 for a sign unveiling ceremony at the Center for Creative Photography.
The sign in front of the building now includes: "Hutsipamowpüts manawkus Nüwüvi piyuga. Pa nüwügaip uroy."
The translation to English reads: "Ocean Woman is mother to all People. Water is all of life."
The inscription refers to the Chemehuevi creation story and Ocean Woman, the tribe's deity. The sign is the latest in a university-wide effort to recognize and celebrate Indigenous languages and cultures.
University leaders at the event included Levi Esquerra, senior vice president for Native American advancement and tribal engagement and a member of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, and Todd J. Tubutis, director of the Center for Creative Photography.
