Sony has no clue how bad what they’re doing is
Old discs have started undergoing a bizarro phenomenon where they just kinda shatter for seemingly no discernable reason
So not only do we have to worry about the digital only future, but the physical-only past - which, if not properly backed up, could literally fracture in your hands if you go to handle it
Apparently, this is caused by two things - The Polycarbonate substrate body layer of CDs degrading over time - and, if the discs are being stored in protective padded foam, over time, it can release ammonia-coating compounds that weaken that same layer and potentially make it crumble in on itself
In a lot of these cases, the discs look fine until they’re physically handled - and while this CAN apply to all sorts of optical storage mediums, CD’s are the ones most commonly affected due to their reliance on a single layer of polycarbonate
